DIY Christmas Ornament Gifts

Look what I Made Mom!

DIYbatmanchristmasornamentI LOVE DIY (Do it yourself) projects! They are fun, affordable, and they come directly from the heart. I especially love DIY projects around Christmas. Since my last post on DIY placemats for kids was so popular, I thought I would share another project I was working on for my nephews, DIY Christmas ornaments. Not only are they cute, but they are light weight which is awesome. Lugging heavy ornaments up and down from an attic or basement every year gets taxing!

  1.  Character image. I drew mine with colored pencils and ink, because that is my specialty, but you can purchase an imagine, draw your own, print an image, etc. Ours happened to be Batman and Robin, but you can do anything. Reindeer, Santa, Cardsock paper craft, princess, you name it.
  2.  100lb Cardstock paper. This adds weight and strength to your image. I recommend, drawing, printing, etc your original image out on this cardstock paper. RobinChristmasornament1
  3. Modge podge and a foam brush. For if you do not follow the advise above.
  4. Scissors
  5. Sticky Backed Felt. I purchased mine from Michaels Arts and Crafts, but you should be able to find this from your local craft store with the 8″ x 11″ felt swatches. diychristmasornamentbacking
  6. Thin Ribbon- any color.
  7. Yarn Needle

  1. Select an image. Be sure that the image is not larger than 5″ tall or it will be a bit to big for the tree.
  2. Print or draw image onto 100lb white cardstock.
  3. If you ignore or are unable to print onto 100lb cardstock, cut out your image from standard paper. Lightly modge podge the back of your image and place it onto 100lb cardstock. Once dry, cut it out. The stability of the cardstock is crucial.
  4. Once cut, peel back the protective paper on your sticky backed felt.
  5. Place image, on to the adhesive felt. Press and hold. Smooth out so there are no bubbles.
  6. Cut out image.
  7. Cut a piece of thin ribbon the size you wish for the ornament ribbon to be. Be sure to leave extra so you can tie the knot. Mine was about 4″
  8. String the ribbon through the yarn needle.
  9. Pierce the ornament with the yarn needle. I placed the ribbon hole directly top center of each of my ornaments. Pull the needle through, leaving one end of the ribbon on each side.
  10. Remove needle being sure to put it back someplace up and away from being harmful and tie the two ends together in a tight double knot. Remove excess and you know have a cut DIY paper ornament!

As always, if you love what see check out our Etsy Shop. We do not sell licensed characters such as Batman and Robin, but this is an awesome example of what we can create with a pen and pencil. You will love our one of a kind hand-drawn magnetic paper doll sets! CLICK HERE for more information. Happy ornament making!

“The Dessert Of The Century”- America’s Test Kitchen

Look what I Made Mom!, Shameless Product Plug

10309127_10152216389767775_4705816089847920787_nWhen America’s Test Kitchen says something is “The Dessert of The Century” They are not messing around! They also are not kidding when they say it is hard to make.

Saturday night “the hubs” thought it would be fun to make this difficult dessert for our date night. So after a quick run to the grocery store we got to work.

This recipe is VERY particular but fortunately America’s Test Kitchen gets you through it. They do such a great job explaining it I won’t try- just go to their website HERE. We had some major pitfalls-like putting the ganache on too hot (thus the dripping chocolate delicious mess verses their pretty picture of perfection. We also over cooked the almond and hazelnut meringue (husband didn’t know which button was the off button on the oven. He is brilliant really- just not usually in the kitchen. poor dear. Good thing he is cute.

As a side note we also took out the coffee flavor aspect to it, and added rum flavoring instead. When it calls for espresso powder in the butter cream- just omit. Than use 1/2 tablespoon of rum flavoring and 1 1/2 tablespoons of water in lieu of 2 tablespoons of water for buttercream.

Despite our flaws during the cooking process the end it was AMAZING.

Truly. do yourself a favor and make this. Than eat it, alone without your children. (we love them but this is “sacred” dessert) If you need something to distract sweet ones while you are in dessert coma we recommend our awesome Magnetic Paper Doll Sets. I LOVE shameless plugs. The Disney Princess Wall Art That Started it All

Look what I Made Mom!, Shameless Product Plug

ImageIf your daughter is anything like mine, you have heard the song “Let It Go” from the Disney hit movie Frozen approximately 8 billion times. My personal favorite is when it is “Scringed” (scream/singed) while she is in the bathroom. (seems appropriate for a recently potty trained kid and I have the sense of humor of a 5 year old boy.) As our move coincided with the Princess mania that is “Frozen” I thought I could somehow incorporate my daughter’s new favorite princess into the decor. Than I got carried away, as I always do, and decided to draw not only Anna and Eliza from “Frozen” but all the Disney Princesses to decorate my kids walls. Here is how it went down.

-I purchased flat wooden wall plaques for 99cents at Walmart.(Don’t judge me for shopping at Wallyworld. I live in a small town-not many options) The great thing is the plaques came with a wall hanging clip on the back so I did not have to staple anything this time! Woo hoo!

-I than drew each Disney Princess I could think of on white paper and colored them with color pencils and ink.

Belle-I modge podge (BEST THING EVER) some pink paper onto each plaque. I than measured and cut out each Princess leaving some white background. Modge podge those Princess on as well and Wa-La! Disney Princess art.

Claires room       Princess wall art

My daughter loved the “dollies” so much and would not stop taking them down to play with them (MUCH to my dismay!) that I thought….hummm. I may have something here. I started drawing and created the Magnetic paper dolls I sell today. NOTE* I do not sell anything Disney/based on Disney. All of my dolls are based on the classic fairy tales, or my imagination. The Wall art pictured is strictly for personal use. I hand draw the dolls on card stock, than scan them, and print them professionally.

I than touch up the print job and adhere them to magnetic adhesive paper. I cut them out and have a really fun on-the-go toy for my kids. I have also recently purchased  5″ x 7″ Metal DVD tins that I recover with decorative scrap-booking paper, and detailed information on the product. The Princess sets come with a hand-drawn castle background inside the tin. I am really excited about this product.

I have come a LONG way since I opened my Etsy shop last year. The magnets are WAY better than the laminate and velcro. My kids are happy, I feel excited, and I hope to make many other kids happy as well. Please check out our shop LittleMissPinkerBell and Like us on Facebook!

Please tell your friends! This is seriously such a great travel toy! It packs up easily and is super easy for kids to play with. I do not recommend it, however for kids who still put things in their mouths. Disney makes tin magnetic paper dolls that are similar but I found myself getting frustrated with all the small pieces. I have tried to minimize that with my own doll sets. Very few, if any tiny pieces. Which is easier for the kids to play with and easier for me to keep track of. Also we are super excited about our first Sale!

Cute, Fun, Practical, and Affordable Baby Gift-Handmade Burp Cloths

I LOVE baby showers. The Babies. The lack of babies (I know that contradicts. I love babies but I also like the two hours of adult girl talk break from my babies..) The chocolate. The excuse to buy adorable baby clothes and say “AWWWW.” a million times. LOVE IT.

However, like many of you I have entered the season of the baby. Everyone I know is having babies and although I wish I had an unlimited income to spend on baby gifts, I don’t. But I still want to give something meaningful, practical, and fun.

HOMEMADE THINGS ROCK. That is why Etsy is my candy shop. My sister-in-law just had a baby shower and I made her handmade burp clothes. It was like $5.00 for 3 and 1 1/2 hours of my life. And they are adorable and worth it because she is a pretty awesome sister-in-law.

1. I found brand new facial family wash cloths for seriously .50 a piece. I know?!?! And they were in a great size, etc.  and off white/vanilla colored.

2. I took them home and pulled out my fabric box. Never throw fabric away. I save all my leftovers, even curtains when I am done with them because you never know when you can re-purpose it. Same with buttons and ribbons.

3. I pulled out some cute fabric I had leftover from the girls room, some ribbon, and a sweater button and Wa-La! I had some cute burp cloths simply by sewing the fabric to the wash cloths.Image

4. You can keep it simple or add embellishments like I did with the fabric flower/button, or the pleated ribbon. That part was not practical but sometimes its fun to a fashionable burp cloth verses a 100% practical one. Everyone wants to be fashionable when being thrown up on……Image

As Always, check out our AWESOMe Etsy Shop.

Introducing: Little Miss PinkerBell!

Shameless Product Plug

After taking a break to adjust to our move, new baby, husband’s new job, etc I have decided to relaunch my paper doll sets. BUT with some big changes. I created an actual doll character named Little Miss PinkerBell. She is a fiery, precocious red head with an adventuresome spirit. She is approximately 5″ tall and pretty gosh darn cute. More importantly she is a MAGNETIC TOY. My daughter ADORES her. And all of PinkerBell’s adventures. So far Miss PinkerBell has traveled to

Pemberly, From Pride and Predjudice,

Downton Abbey

and to the depths of the sea as the Little Mermaid.Image

I know there will be many more adventures to come!

1. Purchase the Doll first or her best friend Luke. (Inspired by my adorable nephew)

2. Purchase any set you would like. The clothing/adventure sets are NOT PRECUT. They will arrive on an 8 1/2 x 11 Magnetic sheet. Look I am a mom and anywhere I can save, I want to. I can pass a bunch of savings onto my customers by simply allowing them to cut out the magnet dolls themselves. For those who don’t want the hassle, they can purchase the addition CUT IT OUT option for an additional fee.  This way everyone is happy. Including me-Because I am hoping you will cut it yourself.

3. Place dolls on a metal surface for playtime. I recommend the fridge at home to distract them while making dinner or a magnet wall board. When you are on the go, I recommend a small cookie sheet. There are some great ideas on how to customize those of which I will share later.

This has been a blast! And it’s a fun hobby for me.

Every New Breast Feeding Mommy’s Best Friend

Baby Bliss, Product Review

I LOVE breastfeeding! I feel so blessed I am able to do it. Let’s face it- breast feeding can be tough business. It’s not for everyone and at first it is SO hard and not to mention painful. Then all of the sudden, the sun breaks through the clouds and it its the best. And it’s a mess. I spent a FORTUNE in wasteful disposable breast pads with my first child. And they were horribly uncomfortable.  Not this time around- Thank you ETSY!!   I bought my reusable pads from Cute and Funky.

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: I have been using these for 3 months now and they are still in great shape! They are adorable (although only I really see them) They are a great price and so comfortable. Worth the investment. At this point with my other child, I would have spent 3 times the money I spent on these great pads and all while slowly trashing the environment.

COMFORT: Soft fabric, and not itchy like the plastic disposable ones. No UCKY tape on the back that pulls up and sticks to you-ugh let’s not even go there. Its just ten million times better than the disposable tape that does not stick to any fabric but will stick to you (ow!)

BARELY ANY LEAKS: When my baby started sleeping through the night. ( A one night occurrence…) I did have a leak. I recommend buying the larger size for the night. There may actually be a nighttime specific option. No leaks during the day!

Breast pad 1No complaints in regards to shipping and came in great packaging. I HIGHLY recommend this product! ALSO NOTE * I bought a 10 pair set. I am a lazy washer and this is good amount. I recommend not buying any less than a 10 pair. In fact if you are like me, and get behind on washing, buy at least 15 pair!  Check out the Facebook Page of Cute and Funky. I will definitely be buying more!

Where Did I Put My Keys Again….

Look what I Made Mom!

Image I am FOREVER missing my keys. There are simply too many great places in my house to put them down, walk away, and never see them again. So one day I thought- enough is enough and I made this this nifty key hook from leftover products around the house! LOVE it. Now when my keys go missing it is because I put it low enough the 2 year old can take them off the hook…oops. Word to the wise. Hang yours up high.

Wood board (You can pick any size mine is about 8 1/2″ x 11″)

Paint Ceiling plant Hooks (amount is up to you- I did 3)

Staple Gun (If adding ribbon/pzazz!)

Ribbon (Optional)

Wooden letters (K E Y S)

Wall hook(s)

Wood Glue

INSTRUCTIONS- Takes about 2 hours total with drying time. (Maybe less I get easily distracted by other things)

1.Paint your board the color of your choice. Let it dry…trust me.

2. Paint your wooden letters while you wait the color of your choice. Let it Dry.

3. Once everything is nice and dry, mark where you want the letters. Take wood glue and glue the letters onto your board.

4. Add Ribbon or optional pzazz of your choice. If you do as I did, you place the ribbon where you want it, than staple gun it to the back of the board to hold it in place.

5. Take plant ceiling hooks ( I picked these, because 1. they are sturdy, 2. they are simple screw-in hooks and 3. they came in white vs gold.) and screw into board. Be sure to mark where you want them before getting hook happy! Otherwise you will end up with some unwanted holes possibly.

6. Add picture hanger hook to the back of your board. Be sure to get the right weight requirement so you don’t rip a hole in your drywall. This should not be too heavy though. Just keep in mind how many keys you plan to hang from it. 7. Measure and Hang your beautiful creation!

BUT HALEY I AM NOT A DO IT MYSELF KINDA GIRL….. Then check out these great keys hooks made on Etsy and buy one! Life is too short anyway. Aren’t they talented?!

The Best Baby Shower Gifts for a Modern Mama

Baby Bliss

It must have been a cold, loooong winter  in my state. Everyone around me is having babies! Including me. So I am forever looking for that perfect baby gift that will make my friends mouths drop in goofy joy. (Like this embarrassing photo of me from my baby shower 2 years. Word to the wise- have joy more ladylike as it could forever be on Facebook.)

DSCF6345 (1)

Now that I am a seasoned mom (as if!) I feel like I have a handle on what modern day moms actually need. So I hope to help you out with a list of the 5 best gifts in my humble opinion. (It is VERY hard to pick just five.)

1. DIAPERS: I know Boooring. But OH.SO.WONDEFUL. and NEEDED. It’s great because everyone gives you different brands so you can find out what works for your family. Plus you go through 10 billion of them and that starts to add up. And no one feels like shopping right after having a baby so a large stock pile of this gold mine is heaven. Be sure to check if your mommy-to-be is going disposable or cloth. Also get creative…It doesn’t have to be boring. Look at these loads of adorableness (Diaper cakes on Etsy) Who wouldn’t love getting one of those?

2. KNIT OR CROCHET BABY BOOTIES: They don’t come off. Babies are born as a mini Howard Houdini. If you put them in a pair of socks-2 seconds later you have no idea where they went. Handmade crochet booties keep the socks on and they stay on themselves. Plus they typically take longer to grow out of verses socks and shoes. Miracle workers in the winter time. A MUST with a winter baby. Check out these winners!

3. SWADDLE BLANKETS WITH VELCRO: I am back to the baby Houdini argument. If you put a baby in regular swaddle blanket without Velcro- you will be swaddling them ALL. NIGHT. LONG. Or maybe I just have extremely wiggly children who require the straight jacket swaddling for sleeping yet wiggle fight it.

You can get swaddle blankets with velcro from any big box store-I personally love Target or you can find some selections on Etsy.

Check out this cool version of the swaddle blanket from StorkSwaddle on

4. BABY SWING or VIBRATING CHAIR: Start them young. There is no way you a new mom can hold her baby every second and I swear by all kinds, any kind as long as it is safe, and functioning. Go in on it with friends and add a Costco size pack of batteries for it too. You will get texts of gratitude for weeks.

5. THE HAPPIEST BABY ON THE BLOCK: This is book every mother should read and re-read by Dr. Harvey Karp. I could kiss that man. It has a very specific technique for how to deal with and prevent fussy, colicy babies and get them to sleep/be happy. And let’s be real ladies. No amount of adorable baby outfits and shoes will ever be as important or appreciated as a happy baby. My mother-in-law gave this book to me and I did kiss her! I LOVE it and I LIVE it. And it’s not just me.  It has over 1,000 reviews on Amazon with a 4.5  out of 5 rating. Unfortunately, there will simply be some grumpy babies. Let us just pray they are not ours and do our part to prevent it!

I would LOVE to hear what you think the top 5 baby gifts are and what has been a lifesaver for you. Come on- Change my opinion on the top 5!
